Standing Seam

Standing seam is a very durable roof option with a modern, bold design. If you want peace of mind that no fasteners are exposed or penetrating the panel, this is a good product for you.

These panels typically come 16” wide by 1 1/2” tall ribs which gives it a bold, accented look. Due to the wide flat surface, the metal comes in a thicker gauge ( 24 or 26 g) compared to 29 gauge in other profiles. This gives it greater durability and resistance to the elements.

Standing Seam looks great on the whole roof but can also be a good combination with shingles when used on accent dormers.

Oil canning ( buckling) is often a side effect of these wide flat panels. It is the nature of a large piece of flat steel! There are solutions to help decrease this effect, but it’s like asking for a new lawn and you don’t want it green. The thicker gauges and a textured finish help hide the buckling. Flutes and striations are small lines bent into the flat section of the panel to add rigidity.

Installation of this roofing system requires some special tools and great craftsmanship as each panel gets hemmed and and carefully fitted into its place. This is why this roofing style can be as much as double the price of screw-down styles.

What is Standing Seam Roofing?

Standing seam roofing is a type of metal roofing system characterized by its distinctive raised seams or vertical ribs that stand above the flat surface of the roof panel. Here are the key features and components of standing seam roofing:

  • Seams: The defining feature of standing seam roofing is its seams, which are raised above the flat surface of the roof panel. These seams run vertically along the length of each panel and are typically interlocked or snapped together to create a watertight seal. The seams are raised to prevent water from pooling on the roof, enhancing its durability and weather resistance.

  • Panels: Standing seam roofs are made up of long, narrow panels that run horizontally across the roof surface. These panels are typically made of metal, such as steel, aluminum, or copper, although other materials may also be used. The panels are installed with the seams raised above the surface, giving the roof its distinctive appearance.

  • Fastening: The panels of standing seam roofing are fastened to the roof deck using concealed clips or fasteners. This method of attachment helps to maintain the clean lines and sleek appearance of the roof while also providing secure and reliable installation.

  • Types of Standing Seam: There are several different types of standing seam roofing, including snap-lock, mechanically seamed, and double-lock standing seam systems. These variations differ in the way the seams are formed and sealed, as well as in their overall appearance and performance characteristics.

  • Benefits: Standing seam roofing offers several advantages over traditional roofing materials. It is highly durable, resistant to weathering, and can last for decades with minimal maintenance. It provides excellent protection against rain, snow, wind, and other environmental elements, making it a popular choice for both residential and commercial buildings.

  • Aesthetic Appeal: In addition to its functional benefits, standing seam roofing is also prized for its aesthetic appeal. The raised seams and sleek lines of standing seam roofs can enhance the architectural style of a building and create a modern, contemporary look.

Overall, standing seam roofing is a versatile and durable option for both residential and commercial buildings, offering excellent performance and aesthetic appeal in a variety of environments.
